Ashford took charge against 10 men and went on to win 3-2.

Player-boss Lye said: “The reason I played myself was to upset their midfield because they had a lot of possession at our place.

“There was a 50-50 tackle and he’s gone over the top of the ball.

“He got red and I got yellow. He just got done by a little bit of experience.”

Lye was in the Gravesend team who played an FA Cup first-round tie at Huddersfield 15 years ago and more recently enjoyed Ryman League promotion with Maidstone.

But the moment Shaun Welford’s cross was turned into his own net by Dan Smith in the third minute of injury time at Dunston will take some beating.

More than 100 entries have been received across the six races, with 14 set to contest the National, a three mile, four furlong, test of stamina. Last season’s champion jockey Philip Hall rides Adept Approach, who won both his starts last season but fell on his last outing in a hunter chase at Fontwell Park. Leading veteran jockey Pete Bull partners Mr Bennett, while area leading 2015 trainer Nick Pearce has Come On You and 2014 top horse The Vicar entered, although the former could take his chance in the conditions race later. Rose Grissell could send out Owenacurra and Kornati Kid who finished first and third in a tight finish to the Conditions race last season. Several horses are set for their racecourse debut in the opening maiden race, including Grissell’s Grayhawk, Bull’s Margot Fontaine and Pearce trained Florabell. Ian Cobb has Letskeepit Simple entered, fifth at Larkhill earlier in the season, while Why Lie looks the one to beat having finished second in his start in May last year. Reigning champion lady jockey Gina Andrews has a choice of rides in the Open – Can Mestret, trained by her father as well as Rey Nacardo who is handled by local trainer, Brook-based David Phelan. The six-race card starts at noon, with the National due off at 1.10pm. Admission is £10 per person with under-16s free. Car parking is also free.
