City course suits Wells

Athletics CYCLING: WREN SEALS DUATHLON PODIUM FINISH AS ADALTA HAVE TWO IN THE TOP FIVE

-

Jon Wells maintained his good form by setting a new personal best in the Cambridge HalfMarathon on Sunday. Dry conditions and a flat, fast course through the city centre helped the Ashford & District Road Runner home in one hour, 29 minutes 16 seconds, finishing 343rd in a field of more than 5,000 finishers. Helen Weeden completed her 28th race over the distance in the Marathon Day event at Deal. The sell-out event gets its name by being held on February 26, over 26.2 miles, with Weeden finishing in 4.36.31. All involved received a bespoke Marathon Day medal. At the Maidstone Duathlon on Sunday, Adalta CC’s James Wren finished third in his age group after completing the 55k course in 2hrs 11mins, with team-mate Ben Kent in fifth (2:25).

Ten Adalta members took on the challenge of the Kentish Killer Sportive at Brands Hatch the same day.

With a gruelling 70 miles ahead of them, the group had a tough day in the saddle but raised funds for the Kent, Sussex and Surrey Air Ambulance Trust, whose helpers were out in force to assist the riders.

In the SERRL at Benenden on Sunday, the weather was not on the riders’ side, it stayed dry but it was incredibly cold.

Many attacks and breakaways happened during the first couple of laps of the 10-mile circuit, before a group managed to get a jump on the bunch.

Rod Archibald went with them and they opened up a four-minute lead over the main bunch.

Archibald crossed the line in sixth, with Keith Watson making a late break from the group to finish 12th.

The rest of the team rolled across with the main group. Craig Joy came home in 14th, Ross Bryan in 16th, followed by Josh Wakeling in 18th and Stuart Baldwin in 29th.

Jason Oram had an untimely puncture with two laps to go, making it impossible catch up the main group again.

On Saturday, Wayne Beba put in some attacks and finished fourth in the San Fairy Ann Spring Criterium E/1/2 Crit race at CycloPark, topping up his points tally for the season.

New race team rider Freya Rawlins rode strongly to take sixth in the women’s event, starting her season in style.

the Saxons, Vikings and Normans Marathon in Deal on Friday, Julie Moby ran the course in a personal best of 3:58.
