Archbishop is credit union’s first patron

-

The Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby, has become the first patron of Kent Savers Credit Union.

Tenterden Community Hub hosts a branch of Kent Savers and is one of only a handful of branches in the county – Tenterden Savers was launched last June.

The aim of the union is not only to encourage saving but to provide affordable finance for people in the county who might otherwise resort to high-interest payday loans.

The archbishop, whose post was ratified at the Kent Savers Credit Union’s annual meeting on April 26, said he was delighted to become the organisation’s patron.

“Developing effective credit unions in this country is a key part of creating a fairer financial system focused on serving the whole community,” he said.

“As patron of Kent Savers Credit Union, I am pleased to be able to highlight and endorse the important work they are doing right across Kent.”

Kent Savers Credit Union chairman Martin Kingman said: “We are hugely honoured that the archbishop has agreed to be our patron and delighted at the personal interest he has taken in raising the profile of credit unions in recent years.”

The Tenterden Community Hub is at St Mildred’s Church hall, in Church Road, Tenterden, and operated in partnership with the Diocese of Canterbury.

It is open on Monday from 2pm4.30pm and Thursday and Friday from 10am-1pm.
