Tegg back in a positive mood

-

Liam Tegg wants Ashford Town to keep doing what has served them well in clinching two successive promotions.

The club’s fortunes have improved, seeing them back in Division 2 this season, after dropping through the leagues and relegated three years running from 2011 to 2014.

Former skipper Tegg is back at the helm, succeeding Sam Kennett who relinquished the role due to family and work commitments, having missed the second half of last season’s Division 3 title success due to injury.

Tegg led the side previously in Division 1, before leaving to join Premier Division Whitstable where he also skippered the side.

He said: “Sam felt he couldn’t give it his all, not having the time to give the job what it needs.”

“I see the job as getting the best out of the players and doing what is best for the team.

“I am excited. We have only lost two games in two years, things are all positive and we want to continue what we have been doing in the last couple of seasons.

Tegg led from the front last season, scoring more than 700 runs – the third highest scorer in the division – and also took 39 wickets, proving a match-winning spin combination with Craig Buckham who topped the bowling charts with 56 victims.

Opener Luke Reeves scored 550 runs.

Town have recruited South African seamer Saul Anstey to spearhead their bowling attack.

The Western Province player hails from Cape Town and plays for Green Point Cricket Club, where batsman Simon Taylor played in 1992, maintaining the contact down the years.

Tegg said: “He arrived last week and comes with a good pedigree and CV.”

Town open up at home to Upchurch on Saturday.
