Mayor’s a perfect fit for reopening of pub

-

When the Generous George pub chain was looking for someone to re-open an Ashford pub after an extensive refurbishment who else could they ask but our very own Mayor of Ashford, GEORGE Koowaree.

So Mayor George will be officially reopening The Pheasant, in Trinity Road, at noon on Monday, November 14.

The watering hole cum restaurant has recently undergone a major revamp that has also seen it rebranded as a Generous George pub.

The brand says it is “well known for being generous by name, generous by nature with the tag line ‘Feel Good Inside’.”

So Generous George Koowaree was a very appropriate person to ask to cut the reopening ribbon and we’ve taken the liberty of creating this special pub sign dedicated to him and the pub to mark the relaunch.

Generous George pubs commit to supporting local charities selected by the staff team and customers and The Pheasant is hoping to raise £10,000 for the Demelza House children’s hospice over the next six months.

Continuing with the George theme, a George Michael tribute act will be performing at the pub on the reopening night and a sneak peek family fun day is being held there on Sunday, November 13, with anyone called George, Georgina, Georgia or with the surname George offered a free drink or ice cream for children.

We hope you all enjoyed the extra hour in bed on Sunday morning as a result of the clocks going back.

It’s something that has been happening now for a century so to mark this anniversary a new survey has been published (oh how Nuts and Bolts loves a good survey) that reveals what Brits dislike most about the clocks going back every autumn.

The time change was introduced originally to make mornings lighter for farmers and school children.

The opinion poll by lighting retailer Scotlight Direct (scotlightdirect.co.uk) has revealed that 30% of us say the most annoying thing about the clocks going back is that it’s still dark before you leave work in the afternoon/ evening and 23% of us don’t like the fact our internal body clocks still wake us up so you don’t actually get that extra hour of sleep you’ve been craving.

Having to manually change all of your clocks at home and in your car, because unlike some smartphones they don’t update themselves, annoys 16%, and apparently 6% of us say the clocks going back is the main topic of conversation for a long time before it actually happens. Yawn.

All we can say is ... roll on the spring, when the clocks go forward again!

As autumn takes hold we’ve experienced a fair few foggy daybreaks in recent weeks. Pictured above is one of them, eye-catchingly captured in Chris Spears’ atmospheric photograph of a misty morning in South Willesborough.

The Kentish Express team (appropriately called Nuts and Bolts) that will again be competing in this year’s Big Quiz later this month is in full training for the event.

We’ve all been going to the gym regularly to get in tip top shape, have cut down on drinking and we’re getting plenty of early nights so we’re fighting fit to take on all comers.

On top of that we’ve been paying particular attention to Strictly and X Factor in case there are any questions relating to these top TV shows and been conducted a celeb watch in the newspapers so we know our Kim Kardashian from Paul Pogba.

So if you think you’re hard enough to take us on get together a team of eight chums (the cleverer the better) and enter the mammoth wine and wisdom evening that’s being staged at the Stour Centre, Ashford on Friday, November 18. Team captains should use discount code ASH16 when booking their table online at www. kmbigquiz.co.uk

This reduces the cost per head to £7, which includes nibbles and snacks on the table, a complimentary beverage and a bottle of wine per table.

We hope to see you there so we can wipe the floor with you in a mind game sort of way!

Well Halloween is now finally out of the way (thank goodness) and Bonfire Night will be done and dusted after this weekend (whoop, whoop).

So then we can all concentrate our efforts on the countdown to Christmas, which means we have 51 days of unadulterated fun-filled festive mania to come. Oh joy!
