BASKETBALL: NORTH SCHOOL TEAM AVENGE HEAVY DEFEAT
North School Varsity Lions won their own two-day Christmas Invitation Tournament, beating Hayes School 67-50.
The victory avenged the heavy defeat suffered the previous year with Lions captain, Emmanuel Ephenus-Agostinho named most valuable player for a flawless defensive performance that included 12 rebounds, six steals and three blocks.
Izzy Solomon shrugged off flu to register eight points, four rebounds, three blocks and three steals in a classy thirdquarter display.
Coach Andrew Sunderland said: “Josh Edwards, of Hayes, is an outstanding offensive player but Emmanuel was immense in limiting his output and deserved MVP. If we can continue this momentum into the new year, we have a great chance of putting together a special season.”
Each team, played three times in the group stages on day one
Varsity Lions beat the Junior Varsity Lions 43-15, before Hayes School beat JV Lions 43-13.
Hayes then won 22-18 against the Varsity Lions, before the Bromley school completed an undefeated opening day by defeating Kent College 50-11 to secure their place in their second successive final.
Kent College were 30-23 winners over the JV Lions, which left the final game of the day to decide who would join Hayes in the gold medal game,
North beat Kent College 40-9, booking their place in the final for the seventh time in as many years.
JV Lions clinched the bronze medal with a 44-34 victory over Kent College. Max Heath was named MVP with 18 points, five assists and five rebounds.
