Vote to decide if public get say over strip clubs
Councillors will vote to decide whether to give the public a say over the council’s policy towards strip clubs and sex shops at a meeting tonight (Thursday).
Ashford Borough Council’s policy on sex venues is set to be renewed by the Cabinet, which will also decide whether to go out to public consultation on the issue.
The authority first adopted the policy in 2011, and provides a guide for the public, councillors and business owners of what is or is not acceptable.
There is no legal requirement to have a policy on sex venues, but the policy describes those who must not be granted a premises licence.
Those banned from doing so include anyone under 18, to residents outside the European Economic Area who hasn’t lived here for six months or more, or to anyone who has had a licence application refused or not renewed.
The licensing committee can also refuse to grant a licence if an applicant has been convicted of a criminal offence, or if it would affect the character of the area and the premises nearby.
The new policy sets out definitions for the venues and would cover activities such as lap dancing, pole dancing, strip shows, table dancing, peep shows and live sex shows.
Council licensing team leader Trevor Ford prepared the report ahead of tonight’s Cabinet meet- ing at the Civic Offices, and said that the council has previously consulted with the police, religious groups, businesses and other local authorities.
In his report he states: “Due to the relatively minor changes proposed it is recommended that the revised policy is adopted without full public consultation.
“The prior policy was subject to such consultation, and it is not expected that a public consultation on these changes would result in any further amendments to the revised policy.”
