Budget store Poundland joins in festive sales mania

New year bonus for shoppers as many prices are slashed to 25p

- By Liane Castle

Popular retailer Poundland dropped the prices of many of its well-known branded items in its first ever January Sale.

Some of the reduced items on offer at the company’s two Ashford town centre stores in County Square and the High Street this week have included Heinz soup, Dolmio sauce, Cadbury cookies, toffee popcorn, custard, toothpaste and even bags of Haribo sweets.

A manager at the High Street branch, who asked not to be named, said the sale has done really well.

He added: “Some of the Christmas items went down to 50p on Christmas Eve and this week they’ve dropped further to 25p and it’s been really popular.

“To be a bit different we reduced the prices of big brands to 50p as well because we’re looking at staying competitive, but whether sales will happen again I don’t know.”

The sale has been very popular among many shoppers.

Graham French, 48, from Lydd, thinks the sale is a very good idea, adding: “It’s very good value for money especially after Christmas when money can be tight. It’s a good way to get rid of old stock.”

Berry Joan, 59, said “It’s so good to get a bargain especially to put away for Christmas next year”.

East Kent Sands charity worker Chris Twydell, 63, said the sale was a very good idea because it meant he could get items for the charity’s next tombola at good value prices.
