Call for action over lorries parked on death-trap road

- By Molly Mileham-Chappell

A Sevington resident has expressed her concern over the number of lorries parking in a residential road near the Ashford Retail Park.

Liz Carter of Kingfisher Close, which is off Church Road, says she struggles to escape her road many times a week as HGVs are parking on double yellow lines on the junction of Church Road with Barrey Road.

The 57-year-old said: “Last week there were four parked there. There is going to be a serious accident. We get it at least once or twice a week.”

Ms Carter said that the lorries were sometimes still parked up on the residential street at lunchtime, causing chaos for those who lived there and for those shopping and working at the nearby Ashford Retail and Business Park.

She said: “I pulled out of the Church Road junction to be confronted by the rear end of a foreign lorry parked nose to tail with three other lorries, who were parked partly on the yellow lines, and then the lines stop.

“I had already pulled round the rear end of the lorry only to be confronted by cars, which had pulled off the A2070 coming towards me. There is barely enough room for cars to pass let alone anything bigger.

“If you say anything to the drivers, you just get abuse.

“In my opinion, this part of Barrey Road needs double yellow lines on both sides.”

The Barrey Road junction with the A2070 Bad Munstereifel Road has been heavily criticised by residents and motorists using the retail park, and has been dubbed a “death trap”.

Ms Carter suggested there should be a new residents-only exit out of Church Road to provide those who live in Sevington with some relief, adding: “All they need to do is put in pop-up bollards.

“If you only give fobs to residents who live there, at least we would get out and live normal lives.

“There’s got to be something done in the short term as well as the long term.”
