Ball hits ton in comfortable win

Tenterden

-

A hundred from Adam Ball led Tenterden to a 72-run win over Hartley on Saturday.

The Kent-all-rounder hit 106 – his first ton of the season – in an impressive total of 311-5, before rain arrived at Morghew Park.

This triggered a delay, leaving the out-of-form defending champions to chase a revised Duckworth Lewis target of 192 in 26 overs but they fell well short.

It was a return to form for Ball, following a second-ball duck the previous week, as Tenterden did the double over Hartley to move into fifth in the Premier Division.

Ball’s knock, which included six sixes and six fours, was made off 108 balls and the only top flight century of the day in the rain-hit programme.

He was well supported by South African all-rounder Leus du Plooy with 89 and 52 off 31 balls by Linden Lockhart.

Hartley won the toss and put the hosts in, with du Plooy and Ball coming together with the score 55-2, following the loss of Chris Vernon (20) and skipper Ben Price – first to go after scoring 15 of the first 18 runs.

Ball and du Plooy shared a third-wicket stand of 161, taking control of the innings as the score moved past the 200 mark with 10 overs left.

Du Plooy, second top run scorer in the league with 634 – 23 behind Hartley’s Dominic Hendricks – went for 89. Ball went on to reach three figures, third out at 279, adding 53 with Lockhart. The former Lordswood captain hit six fours and two sixes as Tenterden went past 300.

Hartley’s attack suffered, three bowlers conceding 145 runs between them off only 22 overs.

The visitors lost openers James Hockley and Richard Selvey-Clinton, to Tom Richards and Sam Weller respectively with only 17 on the board, before the rain came at 44-2 after eight overs.

When play resumed, they lost Hendricks and James Thompson in reaching 74.

The reverse 2nd Xl fixture was abandoned after Hartley reached 188-9 in their 50 overs.

Meanwhile, the club held their first sponsors day on Saturday.

Treasurer Guy Day said: “We get huge support from the local business community so we thought we would try hosting it for the first time at the start of our cricket week.

“They saw a great game of cricket and everybody enjoyed themselves.”

Tenterden were beaten in the final of the Shepherd Neame T20 competition by Tunbridge Wells at Beckenham the following day. Ben Price hit an unbeaten 75 in the semi-final win over Upchurch.
