Police called to shopping centre’s fireworks tests
Explosions in sheep field turn out not to be the work of yobs
A shopping centre’s fireworks tests in a sheep field sparked a police and animal welfare probe over fears the animals had been harmed.
Police were called to the field in South Willesborough off the A2042 and A2070 over fears that yobs were setting off fireworks.
Residents across Ashford reported hearing loud bangs, so police and the RSPCA went to investigate.
RSPCA press officer Amy Ockelford said: “We were made aware of an incident involving fireworks allegedly being let off in a field full of sheep near Ashford.
“The RSPCA will always look into, and if necessary, investigate any complaints made to us about animal welfare.”
But bosses at the Ashford Designer Outlet have since confirmed that the fireworks were set off as part of a test carried out on Tuesday afternoon last week.
Four Rain Communications represents the Outlet, and sen- ior account manager Mariam Quadri said: “A firework test was recently carried out by professionals to ensure the safety of local residents and animals.
“The Outlet will host its latenight shopping event later this month, which will feature fireworks. They are making every effort to ensure the event will run smoothly on the evening for guests and for neighbours.”
In the run-up to bonfire night, the RSPCA has called for a ban on the private use of fireworks apart from at certain events during the year, which could include November 5, New Year’s Eve, Chinese New Year, and Divali.
Mrs Ockelford added: “Fireworks can be extremely frightening for pets, farm animals and wildlife. For now, while displays can take place at any time, we would urge people to take animals into consideration before setting off fireworks and ask them to ensure there are no farm animals or wildlife nearby.”
