Ashford extended their unbeaten start in Kent/Sussex Regional 2 with a victory far more convincing than the scoreline would suggest.

Two first-half strikes proved enough to settle the contest against Holcombe 3rds who were relegated along with Ashford last season.

Ashford started in top gear and produced some excellent flowing hockey that should have led to goals.

Matt Reeve was played in by Lewis Elgar but couldn’t find the target and Allan Dawson found space on the right but could only hit the keeper after beating his man.

The press was working well and Ashford turned the ball over high up the pitch, winning several penalty corners with good work from Robin Miller and Andy Hill.

They finally opened the scoring from one of these corners, which captain James Chamberlain converted.

Holcombe tried to keep the ball but struggled to get near Ashford’s D and the home side doubled their lead after the ball was stolen by Ben Davis. Within three passes Ashford were in Holcombe’s D, with Reeve finishing into the top corner

Ashford started the second half in similiar fashion as the first but after a while, the contest became scrappy.

Holcombe did manage to get into the home D once or twice but good defending meant keeper Robbie Allan was never tested.

Ashford had two goals disallowed and were unlucky when Allan Dawson was unable to convert a chance after a four-pass move that involved Ben Dawson and Rob Playford.

With seven points from nine, Ashford lie second, two points behind Kings and Alleyns 1sts.

Ashford travel to BBHC on Saturday. Ashford 2nds are the early leaders of Kent Area Division 2 after sweeping to a 9-0 win away to Deal 1sts.

The visitors were on top from the start and by half-time had raced into a 6-0 lead.

The second half started with Deal looking rejuvenated but although they enjoyed more of the ball, they failed to stretch the Ashford defence and three further goals confirmed the visitors’ superiority. Sam Handley led the way with four goals and was named joint man-of-the-match with Sam Hunt.

Alfie Miller scored twice, with Kevin Miller, Chris Bollom and Piers Anderson netting one each.

Joe Elgar’s goal was no more than a consolation as the 3rds lost 5-1 to Marden Russets 2nds in Kent Open Premier A.

Marden are one of the tougher opponents in the division but Ashford had the majority of the possession early on, creating several chances.

Marden went ahead against the run of play and despite Elgar’s strike, the home side were 3-1 to the good at half-time.

The second half wasn’t much better for Ashford as they struggled to convert their chances and conceded two further goals.

Ashford 4ths made it three wins out of three in Kent Open Premier C with a 6-1 win over Burnt Ash 5ths. The returning John Browning grabbed a hat-trick, while Roger Lightfoot scored two and Craig Macara the other.

There was another miserly performance from the back three of Guy Lister, Giles Starley and Alex Deacon with goalkeeper Marcus Sweeney enjoying a largely untroubled afternoon.

The win carried Ashford up to second, behind Canterbury Griffins on goal differnce.

Crusaders handed a 5-0 walkover win to Gravesham and Wellcome in Kent Open Division 2 while the 6ths lost 2-1 to Herne Bay in Kent Open Division 4.

Ashford trailed 2-0 at half-time but halved the deficit 15 minutes from time through Mark Rooney who nearly equalised two minutes later.

Ashford ladies are up to third in East Women’s League Division 2 SE after a 3-0 win away to Tunbridge Wells 2nds.

Chaz Kite saw a goal disallowed early on before Kim Cameron finished off a cracking move to open the scoring. Ashford were twice then denied by the woodwork and failed to convert multiple penalty corners before two second-half goals completed their third successive win.

Both were scored by Amy Thomas, one from a well-worked penalty corner and the second an unstoppable strike.

Player-of-the-match Jess Buchanan dominated defence, helping to contain the Wells attack.

The 2nds felt they deserved more from their 0-0 draw at home to Burnt Ash 2nds in Women’s Kent League, Division 1.

They produced a dominant performance with Charlotte Jenner and Jazz Shephard both impressing.

Player-of-the-match Millie Rimmer offered hope when driving down the right but the Burnt Ash defence proved too tough a barricade.

The 3rds drew 2-2 with Canterbury 3As in Division 2.
