FA Sunday Cup MARKET AGAIN MISS OUT AT FIRST ROUND STAGE

-

Market Hotel crashed out of the FA Sunday Cup at the first round stage for the third season running.

They lost 6-2 to Eden Park Rangers on Sunday but manager Liam Smith insists they’ll be back for another go in 2018-19.

He said: “Of course, we will enter again next season. We had a couple of key players missing but that’s no excuse.

“I felt the Market team I have built was not on show. Some harsh words were said to the boys in the changing-room but we will be back bigger and stronger.

“I take full responsibility for losing. I would like to thank everyone that came down and supported the team and I’m just sorry we didn’t do ourselves justice.”

Ryan Smith headed Market into an 18th-minute lead at Lydd Town FC but they’d been in front for barely 90 seconds when Jordon Samuel levelled for Eden Park.

Samuel made it 2-1 on 37 minutes and although Craig Calvert equalised for Market, they went into half-time 3-2 down after conceding to Marcus Black.

Mark Varley doubled the visitors’ lead after the restart and late goals for Nick Whybrow and Ben Lockett sealed Market Hotel’s fate. extra-time to do it, though, after Rob Clark, Jon Turley and Stuart Taylor had kept Mersham right in the tie.

But with Adam Mercer and Terry King also on target, Hamstreet had too much in the end.

Kennington beat Aylesford 6-2 with goals from Mitchell Punt (2), Carlum Macleod (2), Steve Johnson and Lewis Horne.

Billy Somerville scored for AFC Locomotive but they went out 2-1 to Artois United, of the West Kent League.
