Winning poster’s plea to smoking parents

-

Posters bearing the winning design in an anti-smoking competition aimed at parents waiting at the school gates have now been erected.

The contest run by Kent County Council Public Health and Ashford Borough Council asked children to create an eyecatching ‘no smoking’ sign.

The winning design by Ashford Oaks Primary School pupils Mary-Jane Hornes and Casey Cripps have been made into signs and are now displayed on the gates of Willesborough Junior School, Beaver Green Primary and Ashford Oaks.

Smoking has been identified as a priority for both KCC Public Health and the Ashford Health and Wellbeing Boards.

Jane Marshall, the pastoral team leader at Ashford Oaks, said: “The girls are thrilled to see their designs on the school gates.

“The process of designing the signs has really helped raise awareness among all the children about the dangers and risks associated with smoking.

“We have received a very positive reaction and believe the sign will have an effect in reducing the number of people smoking outside the school gates.”

Any primary schools interested in having a sign for their gates should contact envhealth@ashford.gov.uk
