Baker wins award in cake contest
A baker from Ashford is delighted after winning an award at the Cake International competition.
Louise Finn, 31, who had two entries in the competition, which recognises people for their cake decorating, sugarcraft and baking abilities.
Louise runs her company Bake to the Future from her own kitchen in Newtown, specialising in superhero and comic-themed cakes.
She said: “It was an amazing weekend. It all has to be edible although underneath you can use a dummy cake, which I always use for competitions.”
Louise picked up an award for her individual entry, a Game of Thrones-themed tiered cake, but it was the collaborative piece she found more stressful.
Twenty-one professional bakers from all over the country, known as the Lustre Dusters, created an English Country Garden-themed edible display. Each baker was given a tile and design which fitted together like a jigsaw, Louise had to create the pond.
Louise continued: “It was stressful because we didn’t see it all together until the night before. We worried about whether it would fit, especially the path because if it was slightly out of place it would be noticeable, but luckily it matched up perfectly.”
Although the collaborative piece didn’t win an award, the team are determined to return next year.
“The competition wasn’t about winning,” said Louise “But our goal next year is to blow everyone out of the water.”
