Ashford ran in 17 tries as they started the year with a 105-5 victory over Foots Cray at Kinneys Field.

They top Kent 1 with an eightpoint advantage over secondplaced Gillingham Anchorians and a 12-point buffer over thirdplaced Old Gravesendians, both of whom they play in February.

Ashford made a number of mainly positional changes, with Callum Stuckey and Dan Sherrin returning to the pack, and Rhys Fussell and Aaron Bowes forming a new half-back partnership.

The first score came within two minutes, Logan Chandler finishing off a good take and drive by the home forwards.

Rhys Fussell then released fast ball to the left creating space for Chris Baker to outpace the cover defence and a third try followed a good midfield break by hooker Dan Sherrin that created space for Jamie Farris to score.

On the 10 minute mark, Ashford secured the try bonus with their fourth, resulting from an initial break by prop Charlie Norman, carried on by Chandler whose inside pass fed winger Farai Myezwa for the first of his five tries.

Myezwa went over again and this was followed by a brace from Fussell.

On the half hour, Ashford registered their eighth try, the second for Farris. In the last 10 minutes of the half, Ashford added two more tries, with Myezwa securing his hattrick, and Danny Bushell being rewarded for his strong running with a well worked try.

Will Alkin’s five conversions brought Ashford’s half-time lead to 60-0.

An early second half score, a fourth for Mywezwa, added to the visitors’ gloom, but they refused to lie down and although occasionally leaking a score, they slowed the home team’s rate of progress and gained some reward for all their efforts. By the hour mark, Ashford added two more tries, Fussell securing his hattrick and Myezwa rounding off his five-try haul.

In the last quarter, a try from Henry Hall gave Ashford an 88-0 lead before Foots Cray registered their first points when good driving play created an opening for No. 8 Kelvin Munroe to score.

In the closing minutes the home side rounded off their account with three more tries from Fussell and two from Stuckey. With Alkin contributing a further five conversions, Ashford finished the day by passing the hundred mark.

Ashford: Alkin, Myezwa, Colman, Bushell, Baker, Bowes, Fussell, Chandler, Farris, Stuckey, Remington, Knight, Norman, Sherrin, Huxted. Replacements: Redman, Perkins, Hall.

Ashford 2nds were beaten 26-3 at Sevenoaks 4ths in Late Red 3, while the 3rds were 43-3 winners against Sittingbourne 2nds in Five Grain 4 East.

Ashford Ladies defeated Worthing Ladies 32-22 on Sunday.

The hosts secured the opening score but Worthing bounced back immediately with a try of their own.

With Ashford moving the ball wide as often as possible, tries following at a regular intervals.

Worthing were, however, not prepared to give in, and scored three tries of their own that enabled them to stay in touch.

However, Ashford were not to be denied and, courtesy of six tries in all, from Jules Teague, Zia Braimoh, Tanya Pinkham, Kat Smith, Clare Tumber and Leanne Kelly, together with a Poppy James conversion, the home side triumphed by a 10point cushion.
