Kennington go second

Southern Counties EFL

-

Kennington moved up to second in Division 1 and gained ground on leaders Welling Town with Saturday’s 4-0 win at Snodland Town.

Tom Scorer got Kennington off to the perfect start with a goal in the third minute as he drove into the box and saw his shot deflected through the legs of the Snodland keeper.

There were no further goals in the first half but a highly entertaining second period started with Snodland’s Stephen Hafner being given his marching orders after a late challenge on midfielder Gary Clarke.

Kennington wasted no time in capitalising on the extra man advantage. Scorer once again drove into the box before rifling his shot low towards the front post giving the the keeper no chance.

Winger Joe Fisher was then introduced and made an instant impact. Good work down the left from Scorer and Gary Lockyer ended with a low cross from Lockyer finding Fisher at the back post for him to coolly slot home.

The game was wrapped up when Lockyer was brought down inside the box by the Snodland keeper. Fisher stepped up confidently to complete his brace.

With only minutes left the referee awarded a penalty to the hosts which was saved by Kennington keeper Tom Barnes to give him a well deserved clean sheet.

Welling Town remain top but had to settle for a 0-0 draw against Stansfeld. Kennington’s win means they are seven points behind the leaders but with two games in hand. Bradley Baker and Tom Baker hit one apiece and Piers Fuchter scored twice to give Lydd Town their first win in six games, a 4-1 success against Rochester United. Kennington are at Forest Hill Park and Lydd Town at Stansfeld in two of only three Division 1 matches on Saturday.
