Cowdrey makes amends for duck with magnificent seven

Division 2

-

Minster’s Fabian Cowdrey followed up back-to-back centuries with a duck against Dartford – but made them pay. Cowdrey returned his best figures in Kent League cricket after taking 7-26 to stop

Darts getting anywhere near Minster’s 245-8.

The Isle of Sheppey side saw Cowdrey bowled by Callum Lucking (3-63) who also removed Kai Appleby (4) as they batted first at Hesketh Park, but there is strength in depth at the club this season. The fourth-wicket pairing of Sean Ervine (54) and stand-in skipper James Thompson (87 not out) ensured there was a healthy total to defend.

Captain George Duggan said: “Strength in depth was something we looked at for this season and we wanted to make sure we weren’t ever relying on one person.

“Every now and again someone will fail but we’ve got people who can step up.”

Tail-ender Oliver Dewey also frustrated Dartford, with an unbeaten 22 and Minster’s total proved plenty as they won by 93 runs, bowling the hosts out for 152.

And while Cowdrey didn’t have a great day with the bat, he certainly made amends. Duggan said: “I’ve never known him take that many wickets.

“It’s usually one or two because people are very wary of him and have a lot of respect. They are usually happy for him to bowl the 10 overs and not get a lot of runs.”

Chestfield beat Orpington by nine wickets as Dominic Chambers guided them home. Darrell Carter (3-20) took care of the top three Orpington batsman, all of them departing without making double figures. Richard De Mel’s knock of 40 helped give Orpington something to defend, leaving Chestfield needing 132 for victory.

That arrived in the 30th over, with Ben Carpenter-Friend

(23) and Joseph Mitchell (29 not out) adding to Chambers unbeaten 73.

Theeshan Satkunaseelan hit 66 not out for The Mote but few stuck around long enough to build a partnership as they suffered a three-wicket defeat to OD CUACO.

The best of the rest was Richard Coles’ 16 and Alex Fordham’s 14, batting at nine. The Mote ended their innings 162 all out.

OD CUACO got home in the 45th over, with Matthew Luksich taking 3-23 for The Mote. Chris Webster’s 78 not out proved crucial for the victors.

Jarrod Casey shone with the ball as Ashford Town beat

Old Wilsonians by eight wickets.

Casey bowled out both of the Old Boys’ openers and dismissed two more, returning figures of 4-27 off his eight overs, leaving them to chase 112. Liam Tegg went for a duck but the second-wicket partnership of Andy Allon (44 not out) and Luke Reeves (47) accounted for the bulk of the runs, as victory was completed in the 27th over.

Over at the Belmont it proved to be another tough day for Whitstable, who have now lost their opening three games. They were beaten by 186 runs against Sidcup.

The Londoners posted a massive 401-5 with Samuel Lockwood hitting 139 off 80 balls, a knock that included eight sixes and 16 fours.

Mat Kilbey finished five runs short of a century when he was run out by Jonty Barnes. Whitstable were all out for 215 in reply, Josh Smith finishing 46 not out.
