Also, on August 8, we had our very successful Ladies Tournament, with 28 clubs participating, the winners being Peninsula of Rochester and the runners up Lenham, the sun shone, and a great day was had by all. Finally, we had our Club Handicap Competition on August 10 and the finalists are Sean Mitchell and David Bryant, who will play on our Finals Weekend August 24/25.
As our club helps with the Tractor Fest, we only have one match next week, which is a friendly on Wednesday August 21, away to Lenham at 2.30pm. We are also hoping for good weather when we have our Finals Weekend on August 24/25. Visit our website, biddendenbowlsclub.org. for further information.

Football: Last weekend all three adult teams played their first friendly’s before the new season gets under way in September. On Saturday they came away with a

Ride and Stride: Last year the G7 churches raised well over £1,000 in the Rise and Stride event. History Society Programme:
The Charing and Local District History Society has now published its 2019/2020 programme of monthly talks. The interesting topics to be covered include The Red Arrows, Victorian and Edwardian School-days, Bletchley Park, South Foreland Lighthouse, Catherine the Great, Marlow of Canterbury, and the Suppression of the Monasteries. The talks take place in the Charing village hall on the second Thursday of each month, commencing on September 12. Doors open at 7:30pm. Tea and coffee are served from 7:30pm followed by the talk at 8pm. Now could be an ideal time to join the Society. Visitors to any of the talks are welcome at
£3. But full adult membership is only £9 per annum, representing exceptional value if you are interested in the whole series of talks. In addition, the Society exists to promote an active interest in local history. It has around 100 members, runs the regular programme of lectures and outings as well as occasional exhibitions, and has published a number of books on local history. Smarden Community Store: The Action Group would like to thank all the volunteers for their hard work and dedication to the project. Together with the Shareholders’ donations, a total of £180,000 has been raised from various sources to enable the building process to get started.

Vintage Cream Teas: Every Sunday afternoon in August, 2.30 5pm the Church tower is open for escorted trips to see the views across the Marsh, the bells and the clock. In the Church refreshments are available, including cream teas and cake. Funds raised go to the Church. Art Exhibition: A weekend display of works by local artists is planned for September 7 - 8 in Wittersham Church, 10am-4pm. Some of the work will be on sale and refreshments are available. The exhibition will be staged by the Friends of Wittersham Church, who help to raise funds for the upkeep of the Grade 1 listed building. Scarecrow Festival: The Rector is hoping to have a scarecrow festival at Harvest time, with scarecrows appearing on display around the village, to be judged at the end of September by villagers voting for their favourites. If you, or your society/club would like to enter please register at the Rectory before Monday September 23, with a small donation for the Servery Fund.
Kent Police Choir: On Saturday September 14 the Kent Police Choir is coming to Wittersham Church at 7.30pm to give a concert. Tickets £8 available from the Revd Judy 01797 270227 and on the door.

The Heritage of Wye College: A talk by Dr Paul Burnham. Paul’s talk will primarily be about the Grade 1 listed buildings of the College. He was on the lecturing staff from 1969 until his retirement in 1997 and is the author of ‘The College in Wye: A Historical Guide’ published by Wye Historical Society in 2007.
