Ashford United’s pre-season ended in victory, an entertaining 4- 3 success against Great Wakering Rovers at Homelands on Saturday, writes Joe Harbert.
In blustery conditions, United came from a goal behind inside 10 minutes to grab a confidenceboosting win ahead of this weekend’s big kick-off.
Boss Tommy Warrilow believes there’s much more to come from his side, as players fight to be on the team sheet against Phoenix in Isthmian South East on Saturday.
He said: “The first half I don’t think we played to our maximum potential, which probably lowered the atmosphere.
“The boys did things they wouldn’t normally do in a match, and that made it a bit scrappy and a bit of a sweat in all honesty. There’s obviously a lot more to come from us, and the boys know that because of the competition for places.”
A debatable penalty inside the first 10 minutes gave the visitors a surprise lead, before four successive goals put the hosts firmly in control.
Two own goals and a double from new signing David Smith did the damage in a rampant first-half that ultimately proved the difference between the sides.
A brace in the closing stages from Rovers meant United couldn’t celebrate too early. The home defence looked shaky late on but United managed to close the game out with a win.
