Teenager suffers facial injury as officers launch investigation

A teenage referee was allegedly punched in the face by a man following a football match.

An investigation is underway following the incident at Great Chart playing field.

The fracas happened after a match between Pilgrims FC and Lydd Town A on Saturday, September 7, which Pilgrims won 3-0.

The referee - who is only 16 years old - was attacked about 15 to 20 minutes after the final whistle.

In a statement, Pilgrims FC said: “The referee in question is only 16 years old, has only completed four senior appointments and has been a very good referee in all the pre-season games he has covered for us.

“I find this absolutely disgusting and this has no place in the game.

“We as a club will ensure that he has all the support he needs to make sure that the individual is held responsible.

“We are working very closely with Kent FA and the police.

“If anybody has any information relating to this incident, please get in touch immediately.

“We wish the referee a speedy recovery.”

The teenage boy is believed to be recovering well following the incident, which followed the Ashford and District Saturday Football League clash.

A police spokesman said: “We are investigating a report a man assaulted a teenage boy in Singleton Road, Great Chart, at about 4.30pm on Saturday, September 7.

“The victim sustained a facial injury and at present no arrests have been made.

“Inquiries remain ongoing.” The Kent FA confirmed it is working with police, but could release no further statement.

Lydd Town FC was approached for comment by the Kentish Express, but did not respond to our request.
