Smith leaves it late to nick win

early on, but then switched off and gifted them a goal.

“Overall, the match was just disappointing. I didn’t feel like we got going during the game, but the main thing was that we persevered and came away with the three points.”

It took the Nuts & Bolts just seven minutes to open the deadlock – striker Smith prodding home after some great build-up passing from the hosts allowed him to get in behind the Sittingbourne backline.

However, t he expected floodgates failed to open for United from then on, as numerous chances for the visiting side eventually led to them winning a penalty with just over 10 minutes of the firsthalf remaining.

A foul in the United box gave Johan Caney-Bryan the chance to equalise, and he duly slotted the ball past captain Sam Mott despite the ‘keeper guessing the right way.

A lacklustre opening to the second-half followed, however United began to slowly increase the pressure on the opposition defence, and were rewarded.

Jerald Aboagye got in behind the Sittingbourne back four and crossed for Smith to tap home from inside the penalty area.

Manager Warrilow added that his side have things to improve ahead of their match at East Grinstead on Saturday.

“They’re are a young, energetic side, so I’ll make sure that I address that in training so that we move on, because we’re a lot better than our performance on Tuesday showed,” he said.

“I thought that we got into some great areas but we kept coming out and going into built-up areas, so there’s definitely things to work on.

“If we play like that week-in, week-out we’ll probably end up losing more games than we win.”
