LATE TRY FROM HENDERSON SECURES VICTORY

-

Ashford 2nds scored a late try to edge past Aylesford 2nds 17-16 in Kent Rural 3.

They had not played for four weeks and rustiness showed in early exchanges. Aylesford were first to score, rounding off a prolonged period of pressure with a try. The visitors extended their lead early in the second half with a penalty kick. In response, Ashford displayed strong running, notably by Harrison Kemp, and smart handling from Adam Lloyd that committed two defenders released Connor Henderson to score in the corner. Stand-off Steve Golden added the touchline kick to make it 8-7.

Ashford continued to build momentum, with youngsters Adam Butler and Adam Lloyd combining to create a second try, with the latter touching down in the corner to secure a 12-8 lead. Aylesford struck back with a penalty and try that put them back in front at 16-12 as the game reached the final quarter. A try by Conner Henderson in the

78th minute proved decisive, handing the hosts a one point-lead which they held on to. ■ Ashford ladies took on Guernsey on Sunday in what turned out to be a high scoring game won by the visitors 50-22.

The consolation for Ashford was scoring four tries, their highest total in any game this season, and in being able to field a full bench of substitutes, allowing a larger number of players to experience senior rugby.

■ It was another good day for Ashford’s junior sides.

The under-14s secured a good Kent

Cup away win at Dover by 40-5. Next up is an away game against Medway.

The under-15s chalked up a resounding 69-0

Kent Cup win at Sheppey, and a joint under-17/18s ran out 15-7 winners against Gravesend, courtesy of tries from Dan Chuter, Chay Ballantyne, and Sam Harvey.

It was also a special day for Ashford girls, fielding an under-13s team, and at under-15 and 18 levels joining with Channel BaBas players to take part in a tournament at Aylesford.
