‘Some people don’t even use the sanitisers by the door’

-

Elsewhere, there is still anger at a lack of support for some businesses and fears of what could come if restrictions drag on for too long.

Necati Gunes owns the Aspendos chain which opened a Turkish restaurant in Bank Street in the summer, joining other outlets in Deal, Folkestone and Dover.

He says he feels restaurants are still being treated unfairly.

“All the big supermarkets, they’re still getting their custom, despite being less Covid secure than restaurants,” he said.

“You can come to any restaurant and we’ve got sanitisers everywhere, everything is Covid safe, especially compared to the supermarket, where everyone’s going in and touching all of the items.

“You see it everywhere, some people don’t even use the sanitisers by the door in supermarkets.

“It’s not fair, to be honest with you.”

Mr Gunes said that because of the new restrictions, he has been forced to place some employees on furlough for the first time.

He said: “When we went into lockdown we were alright and in Tier 2 we were still trading.

“The rates have obviously gone up and we have to stick to the rules whatever they are.

“But from a business side of things, we’re not making money, we’re not even turning 20% of our takings, and we’re desperately trying to keep hold of the staff and keeping them going.”
