Holocaust memorial goes ahead

-

Holocaust Memorial Day was marked as always but this time virtually.

The arrangements for Ashford and Tenterden yesterday (Wednesday) were changed to comply with the current lockdown restrictions.

The theme for 2021 is Be the Light in the Darkness.

To mark the day, there was a virtual ceremony involving the mayor’s chaplain, the Rev John Emmott, and the borough council’s portfolio holder for culture, tourism and leisure and deputy, Cllrs Matthew Forest and Jenny Webb.

This could be viewed on a dedicated section on the Ashford

Borough Council website, which included a virtual exhibition.

A posy was also laid at the Anne Frank tree in the Memorial Gardens.

The annual day marks the anniversary that Auschwitz-Birkenau, the largest Nazi concentration camp, was liberated in 1945.
