Memorial ride and run

Sandwich Cricket Club are planning a memorial ride and run this weekend - aiming to cover 2,500km collectively over a single day.

The club plan to use the money raised to purchase a defibrillator at The Butts ground, in the middle of Sandwich, while also making a donation to Cancer Research UK in memory of those members who passed away during a difficult past year.

Members are planning to run, cycle or walk the distance from 12pm on Sunday, and have set a fundraising target of £2,500.

Among the members lost are Stuart Key, who died at the age of 56, having played for the club over the last decade and cricket in east Kent since the 1980s. He supported junior players at the club.

“It was laughter that played the major part in Stuart’s cricket,” said the club. “Everyone at the club, as well as a large number of visiting teams, will miss his vocal enjoyment on a Saturday afternoon.”

Paul Smith, ‘a regular and dependable batsman,’ died in November after a battle with cancer. Described as a popular and warm-hearted man, he was always willing to help the club in any capacity that was needed, be that a supporter, scorer or handyman.

Ron Davies played for the club for a quarter of a century, captained the 2nd XI and has been described as a ‘larger than life character ‘ and who helped create the youth programme in the 80s, coaching many of today’s senior players.

Donations can be made through JustGiving and searching for the stccmemorialriderun.
