Don’t blame outlet for town’s problems

- Kerrigan Bethel

Opposition to extending the opening hours of the Designer Outlet is akin to shutting the stable door after the horse has bolted.

Much more thought should have been given originally, not all these years later when it has become embedded into the commercial infrastructure of Ashford.

As it currently stands, restaurants are dealt with in confusing a way, with some having to close much earlier than others. Why the difference? A restaurant is a restaurant and needs to stay open later.

It is unwise to blame the high street’s demise on the outlet, as it’s got little to do with the circumstances that has led to the downturn in footfall. The High Street needs to put its own house in order not seek to blame others for its woes. The Designer Outlet is with us and we should be encouraging it.
