We need fewer cars on roads
Of course, there is far too much traffic driving much too fast on our roads.
Cars also often drive perilously close to the kerbs but pavements are areas where one should be able to walk in safety.
Most people will have heard
of the recent appalling tragedy when a two week old baby was killed in his pram when a car mounted the pavement. I cannot begin to imagine what distress and shock his parents endured as a result of this car going out of control.
A similar incident happened recently when a man in the West Midlands was taking his dog for a walk. Both were killed by a car mounting the pavement. Another recent incident, covered by television news, was of a vehicle that crashed into a house in Burgess Hill and actually ended up in the living room, leaving a huge gaping hole in the wall. And a house in Devon has had 19, yes, 19 incidents of cars crashing into its wall!
If the ‘Twenty’s Plenty’ campaign had been widely implemented, these dreadful tragedies most likely would not have happened.
Of course, there are many wonderful, careful drivers but surely, enough is enough.
The huge amount of cars on our roads needs to be reduced and public transport greatly increased. A single decker bus can accommodate around forty passengers, thereby replacing 40 cars as the majority are usually seen with just one driver.
I have always understood that pedestrians have right of way, but it seems that the car is king with every other television advert selling and promoting this potential killer. There is little regard for the environment or how quickly a human or animal life can be taken through sheer selfishness and thoughtlessness.
