Ashford hit for six in painful home reverse
Ashford men’s 1sts started the second half of the season with a painful 6-1 home defeat against Holcombe 2nds on Saturday.
They gifted Holcs an early goal and were three down by the time they woke up and replied through Oli Kent, who whipped a short corner into the bottom left corner.
The second half was no kinder to Ashford, despite a manof-the-match performance by James Logan, battling for every ball in midfield and making considerably more experienced opponents look silly.
Ashford ladies’ 2nds ran riot in the second half against Maidstone 2nds - winning 7-0. Kim Cameron’s penalty flick broke the deadlock while a combination of keeper
Katie McDonnell and centreback Amanda Ellis denied Maidstone an equaliser before half-time.
Ashford came out fighting after the break with two excellent goals from Cameron, and she took her tally to four after a corker from Emma Bains.
Izzy Fryer deflected home a cross and Chloe Warner completed the scoring from Bains’ strike. Aoife Boyd was named player-of-the-match.
The ladies’ 3rds drew with Folkestone 3rds after losing a two-goal lead.
A dominant start saw Beth Cunningham and Ellie Jones combine to set up Linda Charlton for the opener and Katie Gregson made it two after wrongfooting the keeper on her reverse stick. A defensive mistake gifted Folkestone a goal and the atmosphere turned sour in the second half amid questionable challenges and over-reactions. Ashford failed to take their chances and Folkestone scored a late equaliser from a scrappy short corner.
Ashford men’s 4ths lost 4-3 to league leaders University of Kent.
Lewis McLeod converted a short corner and Seb Fryer scored Ashford’s second as the first half ended 2-2.
They played some of their best hockey of the season, adding a well-worked third, but it wasn’t enough to contain a strong University side.
