Only time will tell if 5G masts are safe

-

A very interesting report on 5G masts. Plenty of reasons cited in favour, the main thrust being that the digital revolution is happening and those who complain about masts should look at the bigger picture and ‘get with the times’.

After all, who wants to stand in the way of someone who needs to download a film in three minutes or communicate from a distance with their fridge (yes, I know, there are more important reasons).

However, there is a flip side. I confess that years ago, I got involved in a mast dispute.

I wrote in, protesting against the position of the mast. I believed that other locations were available.

The main thrust of my objection was over health (and no, I haven’t evolved into a Covid conspiracist). I didn’t focus on this in my written objection because online advice told me to focus on the visual impact, but really it was all about health.

At the time, we had three young children whose bedrooms were on the first floor. The proposed mast was going to be positioned behind our small garden on the edge of the road.

Our house sits on a rise, so the mast head would be at the same level as first-floor windows. The article states that the mast heads, aa a safety precaution are positioned way above house level. Not in my case!

The thing with the health argument is that there is plenty of stuff out there that says that there’s no evidence of health issues associated with masts and that radiation is all within acceptable levels.

The evidence is all based on the ‘now’. In 30 years’ time, when there’s more hard evidence available, there is a risk that scientists say that actually, the mast heads do have a negative effect on health. I know this is crystal ball stuff but by then it would have been too late for us.

Someone once said to me, it’s all about ‘the greater good’.

For the benefit of the majority, sometimes the minority have to be sacrificed (okay, a bit dramatic).

However, I didn’t want that sacrifice being the potential health of my family.

I guess, only time will tell. Philip Hammett
