Kelly launches fun day

Kent sport­ing hero Dame Kelly Holmes will fire the start­ing pis­tol for her home town’s first dragon boat race on Sun­day, June 23. Teams will set off from Ton­bridge’s Big Bridge at 10am and head to­wards the swim­ming pool in the event, which will also her­ald the launch of fam­ily fun day, A Taste of Ton­bridge. Along River Walk, around 50 char­ity and com­mu­nity groups will have stalls packed with in­for­ma­tion about what’s hap­pen­ing in and around the town. The High Street will have more than 40 mar­ket stalls show­cas­ing lo­cal craft, trades and pro­duce. There will be a live cook­ing demon­stra­tion, a fam­ily dog show, street en­ter­tain­ers and stage en­ter­tain­ment. At the sports­ground in the cen­tre of the town, there will also be a num­ber of have-a-go sports ac­tiv­i­ties. The Olympic gold medal­list said: “I’m look­ing for­ward to the event. It prom­ises to be a bril­liant way to bring to­gether the com­mu­nity and cel­e­brate ev­ery­thing Ton­bridge has to of­fer.” A Taste of Ton­bridge takes place from 10am to 4pm.
