In tribute to talented Jake
A concert called Passion and Celebration pays tribute to a much-loved and hugely talented young musician. Jake Barnes, from Canterbury, gained a musical scholarship to St Edmund’s School in the city and then won a further scholarship to study at the Royal College of Music. Tragically, he died from leukaemia aged just 21 on April 26, 2011. He had given his final performance with the wind section of the Festival Chamber Orchestra just days earlier on April 17, 2011. A concert by the same orchestra will now be held in Jake’s memory in the Quire of Canterbury Cathedral on Friday, June 6, with all proceeds going to the Teenage Cancer Trust. Passion and Celebration has been organised by Ian and Tracy Crowther. Performers include countertenor Michael Chance, saxophonist John Harle, jazz guitarist John Parricelli and soprano Sarah Leonard. Other highlights include Aisling, by Michael McGlynn, with Ian Crowther on oboe and Mary Morley on harp. Mrs Crowther said: “Following on from the Festival Chamber Orchestra’s dynamic rendition of Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5 in April at the Colyer-Fergusson Hall, this Concert is an opportunicy to hear the FCO perform Beethoven’s ‘Eroica’ Symphony No. 3, under the baton of guest conductor, Stephen Barlow.” Tickets cost between £10 and £28 from 01227 763965, www. crowthersofcanterbury. co.uk or directly from Crowthers of Canterbury.
