1. Beauty & The Beast (PG)

Bookworm Belle (Emma Watson) trades places with her inventor father as prisoner of The Beast (Dan Stevens), but is surrounded by the kindness of servants. It comes close to the dizzy heights of its animated predecesso­r.

2. Kong: Skull Island (12A)

Bill Randa (John Goodman) spearheads a geological survey to a Pacific island, with passengers including anti-war photojourn­alist Mason Weaver (Brie Larson), rousing a giant ape. A film which flexes its muscles, but punches below its weight.

3. Get Out (15)

Daniel Kaluuya delivers a stellar performanc­e as photograph­er Chris Washington, nervous about meeting the parents of his white girlfriend Rose (Allison Williams). But something about the neighbourh­ood feels out of kilter.

4. Logan (15)

Time waits for no mutant in Hugh Jackman’s violent swansong as one of the most famous characters in the X-men universe. Logan strikes a contemplat­ive tone, setting it apart from the other standalone Wolverine films.

5. The LEGO Batman Movie (U)

Katherine Johnson (Taraji P. Henson), Mary Jackson (Janelle Monae) and Dorothy Vaughan (Octavia Spencer) work as part of NASA’S concerted effort to put a man into space before the Soviets but face discrimina­tion.

10. Moonlight (15)

Chiron (Alex Hibbert) is an obvious target for bullies and his mother Paula (Naomie Harris) is a slave to her drug habit in this collaborat­ion between a director at the height of his powers and a cast willing to lay themselves emotionall­y bare.
