Tarantino taking on the Manson family
almost 50 years have passed since the Manson family murders, which included the brutal slaying of pregnant actress sharon tate and four others, at the home tate shared with her husband, roman polanski. the murders led to the arrest of Charles Manson and members of his quasi-cult, who had been living in the desert, building a battalion of dune buggies in preparation for a coming race war. and now Quentin tarantino is making a film about it all. he’s on the hunt for high profile actors to take part, particularly someone who can play sharon tate. Big names like Margot robbie and Jennifer lawrence are rumoured to be in line for the part, but sharon tate’s sister, debra, has expressed her disapproval for one. namely Oscar-winner Jennifer lawrence. debra said: “not that I have anything against her, but she’s not pretty enough to play sharon. and that’s a horrible thing to say, but I have my standards. My pick would be Margot simply because of her physical beauty.” harsh. But tarantino himself feels differently. he’s been very open about how impressed he’s been by lawrence’s performances, and how he’d like to work with her. the two do seem like a good match. lawrence has star power and has repeatedly proven she can turn her hand to serious drama, while tarantino has a knack of getting surprising performances out of actors we think we know.
I’m very interested to see what type of cast Quentin tarantino builds for this project and the eventual direction of the film. On paper (and in my head) tarantino’s ultra-violent, stylised storytelling will lend itself well to true crime, and the Charles Manson story is a suitably gruesome place to start. fun fact: Charles Manson’s mother once gave him to a childless waitress in exchange for a pitcher of beer. his uncle tracked the waitress down a few days later so he could get his nephew back.
