From riverside refreshment, to lip-smacking treats at a three-day festival and alcohol to drink al fresco, Angela Cole serves it up
Feeling thirsty in this weather? Might a refined elderflower saison - or pale ale - refresh you? Curious Brewery, the brewery owned by Tenterden winemaker, Chapel Down, has launched its second limited edition batch beer, Curiouser & Curiouser: Chapter 2. The delicately refined Elderflower Saison is produced with a winemaker’s twist and is made in collaboration with London-based brewery Brew By Numbers. It’s crisp, dry and fruity and available in limited quantities. It uses the modern classic English grape varietal, Bacchus, which Chapel Down has developed a strong reputation with in its wines and sparkling wines to complement the dry and fruity qualities of Brew By Numbers’ house saison yeast.
Chapel Down head winemaker, Josh Donaghay-spire said:“with Curiouser & Curiouser: Chapter
2 we have strived to create a new, exciting, and forward-thinking beer that is as focused on quality as it is drinkability, crafted with our winemakers care and finesse. “Whether it’s developing new styles, adapting established ones, or shining a light on more enigmatic techniques, Brew By Numbers crafts each beer with the same level of care, attention and respect that we pride ourselves with here at Chapel Down. Brew By Numbers align perfectly with our own goals of producing great, highquality beer and of always staying curious.”
Curious Brewery managing director Gareth Bath added: “We couldn’t be more thrilled with this second chapter to the Curiouser & Curiouser range. At the heart of what we do is an unquenchable thirst to learn and discover, so we try to be fearless in breaking convention and challenging the status quo in our search for great taste. Curiouser & Curiouser epitomises this, and the inspiration we take from craft is coupled with the care that winemakers bring to wine.
“For anyone who thinks of themselves as only a winedrinker, I’d encourage them to give this a try and to explore the overlap.”
Chapter 1, which was released in April, was a Wild Fermented Chardonnay & Bacchus Sour Ale created in partnership with Somerset’s
The Wild Beer Company. Chapter 2 costs £8 a bottle and comes in a 75cl wine bottle, in homage to its wine links. It is available at Fullers and Barworks venues in London where it costs £4.75 a pint and online at curiousbrewery.com
