Monster of a musical
They’re creepy, they’re kooky and they’re coming to the county. That’s right, the Addams Family will be delighting and disturbing audiences at the Orchard Theatre in Dartford.
The beloved bunch of ghouls have been adapted for the stage in this fun musical comedy, starring former Strictly Come Dancing professional Joanne Clifton as Morticia Addams.
“It’s a feel-good, fun, laugh-out-loud family show,” says the 38-year-old dancer. “Audiences know the characters, they know the world of the Addams Family from the TV show and films, but there are some surprises in store.”
The show sees the family’s deadpan daughter Wednesday Addams fall in love with a “normal” boy, forcing the rest of the group to hide their spooky ways.
“It’s fun to see this family who are not the happy-golucky Disneyworld-ish model American family,” says Joanne, who has previously toured the UK with the Rocky Horror Show, Flashdance and Top Hat.
“They’re not typical in any way and it’s really fun to watch how they behave compared to your average TV or movie family.”
While Joanne is excited to play the iconic role, the family’s macabre matriarch is quite a departure from her real life.
“I could maybe have a dark side, but it doesn’t come out very often,” the stage star confesses.
“The main thing we have in common is a fierce love and protection of family, but I don’t think she likes to sit at home playing with Slime or doing jigsaw puzzles in her spare time, whereas I do.”
Joanne is no stranger to Kent, having recently starred in the Marlowe Theatre’s
Christmas pantomime, Jack and the Beanstalk.
“I’ve done loads of things in Dartford and I love how close to home it is,” adds Joanne, who will also be making a second stop locally next month as the show heads to Bromley’s Churchill Theatre from Tuesday, March 1 for five nights.
“The Churchill is a really
great theatre,” adds Joanne.
“Plus because it’s so near London I’ll have lots of friends and family coming along to support me.”
The Addams Family runs at Dartford’s Orchard Theatre from Tuesday, February 22 to Saturday, February 26.
