FILM OF THE WEEK Belfast
Prime Video/sky Store Distinguished by Haris Zambarloukos’s monochrome cinematography, Belfast is a wondrous coming-of-age drama drawn from writerdirector Sir Kenneth Branagh’s vast well of childhood experiences in 1960s Belfast. Nine-year-old rapscallion Buddy and his family – Pa, Ma and older brother Will – live in a predominantly Protestant district of north Belfast, cheek by jowl with Catholic neighbours. Granny (Judi Dench) and Pop live a few streets away.
Billy Clanton and his comrades target Catholic houses in Buddy’s neighbourhood, claiming they are “lookin’ to cleanse the community a wee bit”.
Hostilities result in family members going through barricade checkpoints and local men patrolling nighttime streets with torches. For Pa, it is an unthinkable opportunity to transplant the clan to Australia or Canada: “An escape route.”
A terrific ensemble cast is led by the exuberant Jude Hill as Buddy. Caitriona Balfe’s fearful matriarch (Ma) is the film’s beating heart and she powerfully conveys the emotional turmoil of a family’s forcible displacement from their home. The simple mathematics of Branagh’s crowd-pleasing film add up to a beautifully crafted valentine to a city in the grip of devastating change and a resilient and warm-hearted people, who mine humour in adversity. dangerous secret comes to light. Rupert Friend, Sienna Miller, Naomi Scott and Michelle Dockery head the cast.
COMEDY Hard Cell
Netflix
More than a decade after the conclusion of the Catherine Tate Show, which introduced audiences to foul-mouthed pensioner Joanie Taylor, schoolgirl Lauren Cooper and painfully tactless Ally, Tate portrays a menagerie of colourful characters in this self-penned comedy. Styled as a fly on the wall documentary, Hard Cell follows the staff and inmates of fictional female prison HMP Woldsley under the leadership of governor Laura Willis. Former Eastenders star Cheryl Fergison enters the facility to direct the women in a musical show as part of their rehabilitation. Over the course of six weeks, cameras follow the prisoners including lifer Big Viv as they build sisterly bonds and strengthen relationships behind bars.
