Rubbish system that needs sorting out

-

THE recent news that the rules are changing at the refuse depot in Canterbury regarding vans and trailers to restrict the amount of waste coming in makes me wonder how this problem could be solved. Perhaps if people were allowed to take things away with them the council would have more space. I’m always seeing things that would be useful to me but am not permitted to remove them. If the dump were a private enterprise, there would be a small shop with all manner of discarded junk and furniture for sale, bricks, hardcore, timber etc, etc. The monies raised could pay the wages of the person running the shop. I would also like to apply for that job. Jill Swan, Ashford Road, Canterbury

‘Cats don’t use their own gardens as loos’ let him play outside as it is constantly used as a ‘cat loo’. Repellents from the pet shop have been tried, plus other suggestions of things they don’t like the smell of – all to no avail. Cat poo is highly dangerous if a young child comes into contact with it, yet there seems to be no way to protect one’s family and property against this scourge. Has anyone any helpful ideas please? Signed by a worried granny. Sylvia Verstage, Whitehall Bridge Road, Canterbury again. There appears to be as many experts against such expansion as for it but in their discussions little or no mention is made of the use of our own Manston airport sitting in the middle of east Kent with, I understand, the longest runway in Britain. I must quickly say that I am against any increase in air traffic in the South East. I take the long view that in 20 years or so the world will be more concerned in finding something to eat than buzzing around in airplanes! However if the expansionists have their way surely Manston fits the bill rather than the barmy idea of creating an island in the middle of the Thames or even worse destroying an island community in one part of a bird sanctuary in another.
