Season starts with masterpieces of German baroque
MASTERPIECES of German baroque music will form the programme for the first concert in the 71st season for Canterbury Music Club on Thursday, September 27 at 7.30pm in St Gregory’s centre for music in North Holmes Road. Called Ross Winters mit Freunde, the evening features Ross Winters (recorder), Tony Halstead (harpsichord), Ellen O’Dell (baroque violin) and Christopher Suckling (baroque cello). Ross Winters read music at the Queen’s College, Oxford and then studied the recorder in Amsterdam. He was appointed professor of recorder at the Royal College of Music at the age of 27 and also taught recorder and early music at the London College of Music. He was head of recorder at Birmingham Conservatoire from 1996 until earlier this year. For 10 years he was a regular coach for the National Youth Recorder Orchestra. He lives in Folkestone, teaches at Ashford School and gives private recorder and piano lessons. Christopher Suckling is a principal player with the Gabrieli Consort and Players and the Feinstein Ensemble. As a continuo cellist he has performed and recorded with artists such as Plácido Domingo and Rolando Villazón. He has also broadcast live as a soloist and chamber musician on BBC Radio 3 and Classic FM. Christopher combines his performing career with doctoral research at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama and City University where he is working towards a rediscovery of the realisation of recitative by the violoncellist. Works by Bach, Handel, Vivaldi and Telemann will be played and tickets are £15 on the door, £12 for members of certain local music clubs. Under the Cavatina scheme admission is free for young people aged eight to 25. Students not covered by this scheme entry is £5.
