THE Canterbury & District Primary Schools under-11 football team reached the semi-final of the Daniels Trophy after pipping Thanet on penalties.

Thanet went 1-0 up five minutes into the second half but less than 10 minutes later, Canterbury were level through a strike from Joshua Clement of Herne Bay Juniors.

Keeper Beckham Hulks, of Herne Bay Juniors, kept the hosts out while Canterbury’s Toby Bancroft, of Lorenden Preparatory, fired just wide at the other end. Both sides also hit the bar.

After a tense period of extra-time, a penalty shoot-out followed. Thanet missed their first spot-kick before Canterbury went through 5-3 with Toby Bancroft, Brooke Tiernan, Clement, Matthew Spurling and Oliver Nye converting.

From the start, Canterbury enjoyed most of the possession, pinning the Division 3 leaders back and Pole eventually opened the scoring for the city club.

Canterbury’s back four limited Faversham’s chances before the break and after the interval, it was Canterbury who struck the woodwork twice and tested the Town keeper several times.

The clincher eventually arrived after Canterbury had missed a penalty when man-of-the-match Tommy Warren poked home the decisive second. After the break, the home team took control with an own goal and an Archie Tennant strike made it 3-0 before a good run by Callum Creed put in man-of-thematch Joel Whitcher to add a fourth.
