Awards will celebrate our rich cultural life

-

CULTURE and the arts are vital to the wellbeing of Canterbury. The sector has attracted millions of pounds worth of investment into the district and continues to provide jobs and a real reason for people to visit the city. That is why the Kentish Gazette and its sister papers have teamed up with Canterbury City Council, Kent County Council and Canterbury College to support the Culture Awards 2013 which were due to be launched at The Beaney last night (Wednesday). The awards are designed to celebrate Canterbury’s rich cultural life as well as east Kent more generally. They highlight individual and collective achievements as well as showcasing the quality and diversity of the cultural scene. Editor Leo Whitlock said: “If you have made a real impact in the arts, on the cultural scene or the creative industries or you have been busy promoting our heritage or museums, you can enter for a chance to win an award. Readers can also nominate people and organisations for the East Kent People’s Award.” The deadline for nominations is Friday, March 22, and the shortlist will be put out to a public vote. To enter or vote, visit thecultureawards.org A prestigious presentation evening will take place on Thursday, June 20, at Canterbury Christ Church University’s Augustine House. The awards were created in 2011 by Canterbury for Culture, an independent group representing the views and ambitions of the district’s cultural sector. They will oversee the shortlisting of the awards with an independent panel of experts, including reporter Sian Napier, judging the final winners in eight of the categories.
