Youngsters get their rewards

OLYMPIC ATHLETE JACK GREEN HANDS OUT THE TROPHIES TO CANTERBURY ACADEMY’S TOP SPORTING PUPILS AT THEIR AWARDS NIGHT

OLYMPIAN Jack Green returned to Kent to make the presentati­ons at the Canterbury Academy Sports Awards evening on Friday.

The 21-year-old 400m hurdler gave a speech to students and also handed out the accolades, with Theo Barleycorn winning the KS1 Sportspers­on of the Year award, ahead of Elizabeth Ansell, while Leon Povey took the KS2 Sportspers­on of the Year accolade with Shannon King runner-up.

Lilly Woodward was the Year 6/7 Sportspers­on of the Year, with Shushanta Rai the runner-up, while Chloe Carlton took the Year 8 title ahead of Cameron Proctor.

Kent hockey player and England roller hockey player Alex Mount was the Year 9/10 Sportspers­on of the Year, with Rosie Coombs just behind.

The Year 11 prize went to multisport star and Sports Council member Hannah Port, while runner- up was Mike Lakanu who excelled in basketball, athletics and achieved the best GCSE PE grade of the year.

Athletics star Laura Hanagan was Year 12 Sportspers­on of the Year after a string of personal bests and promising Chelsea FC footballer Ebun Odunbonojo was runner-up.

Team awards went to the Year 7 girls rowing team, the Year 8 boys football, the Year 9 boys basketball team and the Year 10 boys basketball team.

Primary sports leader of the year went to Sports Council member Naomi Jeffers, with Kim Young and Conner Campbell runners-up. Secondary sports leader of the year was Lauren Wiltshire, a key member of the young games makers team at the Paralympic­s.

Darryl Gisby was sports volunteer of the year while rugby star Lydia Beard was club achiever of the year ahead of footballer Sam Lawford, who has signed for Gillingham.

Hockey player Alice Trill was regional achiever of the year, with footballer Kate Cronin the runner-up. Sammie Parker was national achiever of the year ahead of England under-16 basketball star James Lloyd who was runner-up.

England under-16s basketball star Liam Carpenter was internatio­nal achiever of the year after appearing in the European Championsh­ips, just ahead of team-mate Dave Couchman who was runner-up.

Footballer and athlete Brandon Bryce was gifted and talented pupil of the year with Woodward runner-up. The Canterbury Partnershi­p Award winners were: Primary Sports Personalit­y of the year – Esperanza King from Wickhambre­aux; Secondary Sports Personalit­y of the Year – Dave Couchman from Canterbury High; Primary Team of the Year – St Peters Methodist Primary School; Secondary Team of the Year - under-15 boys rugby team from Chaucer Technology; Sports Leader of the Year – Jamie Harris from Chaucer Technology; Unsung Hero – Phil Cheetham from Chartham Primary School.
