DEFENCES were on top as Crimefighter Alarms Diamonds met Pilgrims 1 in the Canterbury & District League, Premier Division. Pilgrims bossed the first quarter and although Diamonds clawed back the deficit to a single goal by half-time, Pilgrims held their advantage through the third period and came through 28-23 winners. Emma Park (Pilgrims) and Emma Williams (Diamonds) were awarded star players while Park was awarded best defence and team-mate Kerri Bradley best attack. In one of only two other games to beat the weather, Pilgrims 2 started their match against muchchanged Kingsman Thermal at full speed. Thermal’s confidence grew as the game wore on with Linda Hartley at GD, playing her last game before relocating to London, instrumental in turning defence into attack and gaining her the star player award as Thermal rallied to win 43-23. Star player for Pilgrims was Nicki Sands at centre while best defence and attack were awarded to Kingsman Thermal’s WD Michelle Hards and WA Sarah Spiller. Canterbury eased to a 67–27 win over TFI, despite K Barlow impressing for TFI and deservedly winning star player for her team. Sally Eyre, playing out of position at WD, was awarded star player for Canterbury while Alice Ames, Canterbury’s GA and Helen Webb, their GD, were awarded best attack and best defence. EAST Kent Mavericks will hold a recruitment day at Aylesham Welfare Leisure Centre allowing novices to come and try their hand at American football. The newly-promoted National Premier Division side want new players for this season after a successful 2012. The rookie day on Sunday will see newcomers introduced to the sport, different positions and the team. Players should meet at 10.45am and bring sports clothes, a gum shield and non-metal studs for training on a 3G surface.
