Canterbury take runners-up spot

Canterbury finished as runnersup in the Forest of Blean League’s annual Millennium Cup triples tournament at Charing on Saturday.

The cup was won by defending champions Ashford Town.

Canterbury shared the four rinks played at St Lawrence but won by 22 shots overall. St Lawrence 73 Canterbury 95: K Wright, K Brooks, T Nelson won 29-11; D Hone, BJ White, I Burton won 28-17; R Close, M Huchison, A Cornfoot lost 25-20; M Gulvin, D Jenkins, D Charlton lost 20-18.

In the East Kent Mixed Triples League, Canterbury slipped to a 24-shot home defeat against Birchingto­n. Canterbury 88 Birchingto­n 112: C Bond, D Jenkins, R Mortley won 20-18; J Wilkinson, W Brooks, G Long drew 17-17; V Lewis, E Smith, D Swann lost 23-15; V Hughes, E Holder, C Holder lost 23-13; M Hopkins, H Bond, W Hillman lost 13-12.

The Ladies Invitation Mixed Pairs Tournament at Canterbury attracted 40 pairs from across the South East.

Freda and Malcolm Smith, of Kearsney BC, won all three games and 22 ends with a shot difference of 25 to take the title ahead of Sue and Mick Petts, of Milton Regis. Brenda Graham and Phil Philpott of Aylesham/ Boughton were third. Herne Bay 146 Boughton 71: Bob Baldwin, Bob Day, Bill Robb won 22-15; Dave Mason, Robbie Irons, Ian Robb won 32-5; Terry Kelly, Alf Collar, Brian Dennis won 16-13; Ray Chipperfie­ld, Ray Day, Tony Bishop won 26-14; Len Brown, Peter Gibson, Brian Gisby won 26-13; Les Mason, John Melford, Eddie Allen won 24-11.

In the East Kent Mixed Triples League, rink honours were shared three each with Birchingto­n but the visitors won by four shots. Herne Bay 100 Birchingto­n 104: John Dryland, Gill Baker, Bob Day lost 17-12; Dawn Harris, Colin Hadlow, Ray Day lost 19-11; Marian Algar, Len Brown, Brian Dennis lost 19-16; John Phillips, Ellen Foster, Jeff Graham lost 23-19; Edie Nicholls, Paul Evans, Tony Bishop won 20-13; Harry Algar, Lyn Phillips, Bill Robb won 19-16.

Bay won six of the seven rinks played against West Surrey Bowling Associatio­n for a 30-shot win overall. Herne Bay 132 West Surrey Bowling Associatio­n 102: Mary Watson, John White, Ronnie Phillips, Ray Chipperfie­ld won 17-16; Robin Woollams, Sid Hall, Bruce Clayton, Bill Robb won 23-20; John Rawlings, David Knight, Norman Kneale, Jeff Graham lost 20-10; Doreen Woollams, John Offer, Ruth Emert, Stuart Emert won 18-12; Ray Elsden, Frank Dwyer, Terry Taunton, Bob Baldwin won 26-11; Ted Milton, Colin Tobutt, Paul Green, Paul Evans won 21-8; John Grogan, Ben Foster, Andy Cattanach, Jim Covill won 17-15.

Bay comfortabl­y beat Tudor (Eltham) by 95 shots, winning six of the seven rinks and a triple. Herne Bay 200 Tudor 105: Doreen Woollams, Sue Grogan, Paul Green, Paul Evans won 27-16; John Grogan, Pauline Hougham, Joyce Whitlock, Alf Collar won 31-7; Diane Wiltshire, Mike Tibby, Ronnie Phillips, John Melford won 22–15; Sylvia Sweeting, John Offer, Gill Phillips, Bill Robb won 32-9; John Rawlings, Sheila Tibby, Rose Penniall, Bruce Clayton lost 18-17; Brenda Bridges, Steve Caruth, Lyn Phillips, Bob Day won 20-13; Diane Melford, David Knight, Barbara Morris won 31-8; Robin Woollams, Marianne Offer, Sheila McDowell, Alan Kent won 20-19.
