Bumper field expected for half-marathon

ATHLETICS

-

The Canterbury HalfMarathon attracted a field of more than 600 runners on its return to the racing calendar last year and organisers are hoping for an even bigger turnout for this year’s race. The event takes place on on Bank Holiday Monday, August 26 and has a new race sponsor in city accountants Burgess Hodgson. As befits one of Kent’s leading road running events, the race will see some of the county’s top runners lining up with club athletes, seasoned runners and those looking to complete their first half marathon. Entries have also been received from runners from Scotland, Germany and Switzerland. Race director Martin Burke said: “We were delighted with the support for the event last year and want to build on that success. “Part of the appeal of the race is that it does attract runners of all shapes, sizes and abilities, all looking to complete the race and achieve their own personal milestone.” Around 800 runners are expected for the race whose previous winners include Aboura Mahieddine from Thanet Road Runners, Barney Southern, from the Serpentine Running Club, and last year’s winner was Jeff Pyrah from Hastings AC. The ladies’ winner in 2012 was Sarah Stradling of Colchester AC. This year’s race once again benefits the Pilgrims Hospices and several runners will be using the race to meet their own fundraising targets for the Hospice as well as other local charities and good causes. The race starts at 10am with the start and finish being on Merton Lane. The race headquarters is located on Merton Farm, by permission of landowner Mr Hulme. All finishers will receive a commemorative medal plus there will be trophies and prizes for the leading runners. In addition to the main half marathon race, there is a two-mile fun run and children’s race. The event is organised by race managers Nice Work with support from the Canterbury Forest of Blean Rotary Club. Entries wil be accepted on the day, priced £20 and further details may be obtained from www.nicework.org.uk
