Building society chips in to help feed the homeless

lstafford@thekmgroup.co.uk @LowriStafford A building society stepped up to the plate to help feed the homeless in Canterbury, by providing a brand-new oven.

Catching Lives, which is based in Station Road East, faced crisis when its only oven stopped working.

It meant the charity could not provide rough sleepers and other destitute people with hot meals.

Manager Terry Gore said: “Providing meals for the homeless, vulnerably-housed and destitute people in Canterbury relies on equipment, but unfortunately when that fails we really do struggle to make the wholesome meals required.”

The Yorkshire Building Society chipped in by donating more than £1,000 to buy a new oven.

Mr Gore continued: “We’re so grateful to them for stepping in when they heard our oven had stopped working. We can’t thank them enough for helping us quickly turn a bad situation into a good one.

“The new oven is fantastic and will help us continue making and serving meals to those who need us for many more years to come.” The money was donated through the Yorkshire Building Society Charitable Foundation, which is supported by the society’s staff and members.

Canterbury branch manager Nick Austin said: “As a society we’re committed to helping local good causes, so when we heard Catching Lives were in need of an oven to be able to continue their good service to the homeless, we did what we could to support them.”
