Wilson hooks the Blundell Cup
ANGLING
Mick Wilson was the convincing winner of the Canterbury & District Angling Association’s annual Blundell Cup at Trenley and Stour Lakes.
Wilson’s winning weight of 20lb 3oz – which included two bream and a good bag of quality roach and rudd – was taken using a feeder rod.
Not all the competitors weighed in during the tough match but Mark Furnell’s 9lb 14.5oz, which also included two good bream and smaller roach and rudd taken on the feeder, was more than enough to earn him second, ahead of Mark Cleary and Steve West who shared third with 4lb 6.5oz.
Cleary caught roach and rudd and West a single bream during a bright, warm and windy day.
C&DAA members will be pleased to learn that Stonar Lake has now fully re-opened and catches from the popular Sandwich still water continue to improve as they have done throughout the season.
Illustrating the varied fish and sizes at Stonar, Gary Twyman hooked a few rudd and a 20lb mirror while Robert Maxstead bagged up 60lb of bream.
Gareth Price netted 20 carp to 13lb 8oz and Frank West 27 bream to 6lb and three carp to 14lb 6oz. Other prominent Stonar catches have included tench, ghost carp, eels and Brian Mills’ bream to 5lb, a 6lb common carp and a splendid roach of 2lb 12oz.
At Fordwich Lake Steve Kemp fished from the north bank at long range to land a 23lb common carp and Mark Plank three more to 24lb a piece. Peter Fulbrook fished well at Trenley Lake to catch 35 bream to 5lb plus six tench to 6lb all using ledgered plastic sweetcorn from the north bank, known as the deeps.
Anglers fishing in the River Stour have reported large catches of small roach, especially at Plucks Gutter, while plenty of roach at Cut End with a few skimmer bream are typically being hooked. Dave Burrows ledgered worm to hook 26lb of skimmers to 2lb.
This year’s CDAA Open Competition will be fished on the River Stour on Sunday, September 8.
The competition is open to members and non-members of the association.
The draw will take place at 8am and fishing will be from 10am to 4pm at both Grove Ferry and Plucks Gutter.
