Police want to speak to a driver after a pensioner was seriously hurt in a crash involving an ambulance.

The 88- year- old man was injured when his blue Volvo was in collision with a silver Ford Fiesta in New Dover Road, Canterbury, at 2pm on Thursday, April 17.

An ambulance car responding to a 999 call then smashed head-on into the man’s Volvo between the A2 and Old Dover Road roundabout.

He suffered serious arm and leg injuries and is now recovering in a London hospital in a stable condition.

The female paramedic suffered shoulder pain and was taken to the William Harvey Hospital in Ashford.

South East Coast Ambulance Service spokesman Rich Airey said another ambulance had been assigned to respond to the other 999 call in her place. Emergency crews including two ambulances and two more response cars rushed to the scene.

Police closed the road in both directions near the Old Gate Inn while the cause of the crash was investigated.

Diversions were put in place and drivers were advised to avoid the area as tailbacks stretched back to the city centre.

Detectives have now appealed for the driver of a light blue vehicle that was overtaken by the ambulance car just before the crash to come forward.

If the driver was you, call the police’s serious collision investigation unit on 01622 798538.
