New season up and running

BOWLS: SUN SHINES ON THE MEN BUT RAIN MEANS LADIES HAVE TO CURTAIL THEIR OPENING DAY AT CANTERBURY

Canterbury BC’s men opened their season on Saturday in perfect weather with nearly 70 members playing in the annual President’s team versus Captain’s team fixture.

The match saw a 185-153 victory for the President’s team.

The ladies played their seasonopen­ing Chairlady versus Lady Captain fixture on Sunday, though heavy rain caused the match to be abandoned halfway through with the Chairladie­s team leading.

The bowling season opened at Herne Bay with a mixed drive in which 92 members played contested, with Al Burt, Lyn Riches and Gill Baker coming out on top.

Heavy rain seem certain to curtail the first match of the season against Belvedere Social, but fortunatel­y it abated sufficient­ly after tea to allow the game to be completed, though Bay won only two of the six rinks played and went down by 25 shots. Herne Bay 196 Belvedere Social 221: Stan Miller, Sue Grogan, Bruce Clayton, Jeff Graham lost 21-15; John Phillips, Danny Welch, Sara Trotter, Bill Robb won 24-8; Harry Algar, Val Miller, Mike Ward, Terry Kelly lost 35-11; Peter Nolan, Marianne Offer, David Knight, Bob Day lost 22-14; John Offer, John Grogan, Lyn Phillips, Stuart Emert won 20-16; John Rawlings, Diane Wiltshire, Tony Rowson, Ellen Foster lost 19-12.

Faversham Recreation BC began their season on Saturday with the annual match between sides representi­ng the President and Past President.

President Janet Wimble led her side, though past president Aubrey Camp was unwell and was represente­d by presidente­lect Geoff Ashurst.

The president’s team eventually prevailed 103–94.
