Village school given good report
A village primary school is this week celebrating a remarkable turnaround in its fortunes.
In 2013 Chartham primary was told it requires improvement in a damning Ofsted inspection.
But a glowing report released last week details the huge strides it has taken to earn a good rating from the government watchdog.
Inspectors highlighted the work of head teacher Dean Jones, other senior staff and governors in making huge improvements to the school in Shalmsford Street.
The report says pupils are “great ambassadors for the school, enjoy their work and build good, trusting relationships with teachers”. “The school’s relentless focus on improving reading has had a very positive impact on pupils’ achievement,” it says.
It goes on to say considerable changes to the governance of the school have resulted in a “skilled, well informed governing body that holds the school to account very effectively for its performance”.
One parent told inspectors: “I am very pleased with the ethos and atmosphere of the school and its staff. “They work together to create a positive learning environment and the children are polite, caring and engaged in their learning.” The report also notes that teaching has improved and standards in reading, writing and maths are rising.
Mr Jones said: “We are delighted to share our latest Ofsted inspection report and we are really pleased that Chartham Primary School has now been recognised as a good school in all areas.
“This report is a fantastic achievement for everyone within our school community and for our families.
“The pupils are a real credit. The inspectors were very impressed with the way they behave.”
